Derek Heitz has been providing environmental support to clients in construction and heavy industry since 2014. After graduating from the University of Washington, he took a role that focused almost exclusively on stormwater pollution and real-time reductions of pollution for clients with industrial and construction stormwater permits. His work helping these clients has led him to appreciate the difficulties faced by industrial facilities in their efforts to comply with environmental standards.  He’s taken on many roles in his career, with work involving environmental permitting; facility inspections and site assessments; documenting and treating pollutant sources; drafting plans for pollution prevention and water management; conducting bench- and field-scale proof-of-concept testing; and assisting with project cost estimation, scheduling, and management. He’s also assisted with characterization, investigation, and cleanup of sites that have been impacted by historical industrial activities.

Outside work, Derek spends as much time as he can with his family. He enjoys running, cooking, and volunteering his time and knowledge as much as he can. There’s a good chance you can find him at a history museum or on a running route around the Port of Tacoma pretty much any weekend.

Do you have any pets? What are their names?

Yes! I have a corgi named Twinkie. He is two years old, and he is an absolute ball of energy. He’s been to more of the MFA offices than some of my coworkers, and he loves to distract everyone when they’re trying to get their work done.
