For 15 years, Brian has worked in the field of air quality consulting across the United States and internationally. He currently leads both projects and people with the goal of delivering high-quality, complex emissions inventories; ambient air quality and human health risk assessments; local, state, and federal air permitting; and air pollution control evaluations (Best Available Control Technology/Reasonably Available Control Technology/Lowest Achievable Emission Rate). Brian has a broad technical skillset that includes regulatory applicability and compliance assistance, source test coordination and oversight, air dispersion modeling, and regulatory negotiation. Brian also manages MFA’s industrial ventilation design team, which provides design, troubleshooting, and commissioning services for industrial ventilation systems.

Brian was born and raised in Oregon and is happy to be working for a company with such a strong presence in his home state. His career in air quality started in a small lab setting where he conducted emissions testing on various biomass fuel sources. He has continued to broaden his skillset as his air quality consulting career has progressed. One of the interesting aspects of air quality consulting is being able to tour large industrial facilities. These tours give an inside view of how the things we use in our daily lives are made and help build in-depth knowledge of the facility’s process flow. Brian and the air quality team at MFA use this knowledge to help develop solutions for air quality permitting challenges that may arise.

What was your first job?

My first job out of college was as a combustion research assistant, running tests to determine emissions from various fuel types. It was absolutely the doorway to my career in air quality consulting!
