In 1998, Alan began working at MFA as a staff geologist, and his career has matured along with the growth of the firm. Alan’s experience spans the entire Pacific Northwest and includes work for public and private clients and projects of every scale. He is recognized for his execution of efficient and effective projects ranging from environmental investigations to cleanup action plans. Alan is the program manager for multiple large investigations and remedial designs supporting cleanup of basin-wide impacts related to historical mining operations in northern Idaho. He has in-depth knowledge of Washington, Oregon, and federal environmental regulations and experience in negotiation with state and federal agencies. Alan has carried out successful negotiations with oversight agencies, providing them with focused and cost-effective approaches to site investigation, risk assessment, and remedy selection that resulted in significant client benefits while meeting regulatory requirements.

When Alan is not in the office, you can usually find him remodeling his house or on the golf course. Although given the choice he would be in the mountains camping and hiking.

A favorite project and why?

The Lake River Industrial Site, a former wood-treating site (Pacific Wood Treating) in Ridgefield, Washington, on land owned by the Port of Ridgefield. My family is from Ridgefield, and I grew up in the town. This is the first site I ever worked on, and it turned out to be a very complicated cleanup. We used innovative techniques like stream injection to clean up a 4-acre nonaqueous-phase liquid plume. Many of the first 12 years of my career were spent working on this project. To see it completed, return the city’s only waterfront to productive use, and provide the community access to the area fills me with a lot of pride. Many thanks to the Port staff and commissioners, Ecology, and my MFA teammates.
