Energy

The energy landscape in the Pacific Northwest is changing rapidly, and MFA’s integrated consulting services can help make your project or program a success in this new environment. We help energy developers find suitable locations, obtain permits, and complete civil design. We work alongside agencies and utilities to engage communities on incentive programs, environmental justice concerns, and siting processes. Whether you are planning for green hydrogen, biofuel, onshore or offshore wind, or solar energy, MFA is large enough to provide you with start-to-finish services and small enough to give your project the attention it deserves.

Site Feasibility and Siting Analysis

Our custom web-based site selection and analysis tools find and compare properties that meet your development’s criteria, such as desired transportation infrastructure, available utilities, or water rights. Once these properties are identified, MFA can assist with engineering cost estimates and due diligence like Phase I and Phase II environmental assessments, all to help inform your business decisions and start your development off on the right track.

Land Use Planning

We facilitate permitting processes, including both local land use and SEPA and NEPA, that typically involve addressing specific site considerations and working with multiple agencies that may have many competing requirements. Our thorough land development planning process helps our clients move past permitting and into implementation.

Communications and Community Engagement

Our strategic communications specialists have helped state agencies and utilities engage underserved communities across the PNW regarding the benefits of clean energy, transportation electrification, and the tradeoffs involved in project siting. We can help you comply with federal Justice40 requirements and Washington State HEAL Act and CETA requirements.

Looking to build a clean energy facility? Don’t let belated community engagement derail your project. MFA can prepare a strategic communications plan that establishes a basis of trust with nearby communities and helps you comply with local, state, and federal regulatory requirements around community engagement.

Environmental Justice Assessments

Understanding the environmental justice history and context of your site is due diligence that helps your project respond to regulatory and community concerns. Regulatory requirements, such as for permit applications or funding programs, require applicants to analyze their project’s potential environmental, social, and economic effects. Besides satisfying regulatory requirements, our environmental justice assessments can also guide community engagement, site design, or operational considerations.

Hydrogeology

Siting hydrogen electrolyzers or another project with water requirements? Our hydrogeology services include water supply evaluations and aquifer testing; hydrogeologic data review; and technical support for project reviews, permitting, and water rights applications.

Site Civil Engineering Design

We design infrastructure to meet your full buildout development needs, and we keep an eye on efficiency and value engineering to help ensure that your project matches your vision. Our team combines its skills and knowledge in sustainable site design, planning, low-impact development, natural systems, water quality, and infrastructure to develop cost-effective and creative designs for urban and rural environments. We also make the most of your resources by identifying opportunities to use existing on-site site infrastructure.

Environmental Permitting

We have an excellent track record of obtaining environmental permits for energy projects, based on our strong technical understanding and good relationships with regulators. We can help you obtain stormwater permits and can complete an air permit applicability analysis to understand your project’s permit requirements. When appropriate, we can advise on design elements that will ease permitting. We regularly perform dispersion modeling, demonstrate compliance with National Ambient Air Quality Standards, and conduct risk assessments related to air toxics program compliance.
