The Port of Kalama (Port) desired to redevelop an existing industrial site for administration office use. The redevelopment required civil engineering design and shoreline development permitting, including use of a State Environmental Policy Act checklist.
MFA assisted the Port with the design and permitting aspects of the redevelopment. The site design utilized a progressive Low Impact Development based approach incorporating the landscape as stormwater management features.
The one-story building resembles a traditional waterfront warehouse of the 1800s, and the interpretive center within the building highlights the area’s history as a regional commercial and transportation hub, housing cultural artifacts, memorabilia, and replicas of the past. The new port office building combined function and esthetics meeting the Port’s needs and bettering the community. With this site, the Port became a trendsetter and role model for the community in sustainable development.
The final project result equipped the Port with an environmentally sustainable site for multi-purpose use as an administrative building and an exhibit space for the community while integrating stormwater and landscape design with Low Impact Development techniques.
