A Day in the Life of an MFA Senior Engineer
7:30 a.m. Arrive at the Vancouver office. Grab my morning coffee and review and respond to email. Then prepare a to-do list for the day.
8:00 a.m. Prepare a scope of work and fee estimate for conceptual design of a potential waterfront mixed-use development on a former mill site. Major components of the work include cleanup of the mill remnants, a stream relocation, roadway design, extending utilities about a mile to serve the site, and steep slope considerations.
10:00 a.m. Reach out to my contact at Clark County regarding the permit status of a recreational trailhead expansion project. Then update the project client and discuss how MFA will aid in construction contracting and scheduling.
10:30 a.m. Meet with team member Garrick Kalmeta, staff engineer, to see how he is doing, how his project workload is, and discuss everyday action items to help his career progress.
11:30 a.m. Get lunch at a local favorite, Shanahan’s Pub & Grill with Stacy Frost, principal engineer.
12:30 p.m. Review design plans and a hydrology report for a stormwater treatment retrofit project in the City of Portland. Attend a virtual meeting to discuss changes and additional information needed with Alfredo Aguirre, staff engineer, and Brooke Harmon, project engineer.
2:30 p.m. Call the client for the stormwater treatment retrofit project to update them on project status and the next steps in the permitting process.
3:00 p.m. Meet with Curtis Riley, project landscape architect and planner, and Ben Johnson, project planner, to discuss conceptual design layouts and cost estimates for a mixed-use development for the Port of Skamania County and a potential restaurant for the Port of Sunnyside.
4:00 p.m. Respond to email and wrap up.
4:30 p.m. Leave the office.
