Zidell Urban Waterfront Cleanup and Redevelopment

Client Name

Zidell Marine Corporation

Related Sector

Maul Foster & Alongi, Inc. is involved in large-scale urban waterfront cleanups such as this one on the Willamette River in Portland, Oregon, where existing industrial operations and cleanup are taken into consideration. The property was a scrap metal and shipbuilding and dismantling facility that began operations in the early 1900s. With MFA’s assistance, the property owner, Zidell Marine Corporation, developed a comprehensive upland, bank, and sediment cleanup plan that allowed current industrial operations to continue while also preparing for future redevelopment.

Following its lead role in the investigation, feasibility study, and remedy negotiations and design, MFA worked as part of a multidisciplinary construction oversight and project management team to produce a successful construction project that was certifiable by the regulatory agencies. This complex cleanup is the largest privately funded brownfield remediation on the Willamette River to date. The project involved excavation and management of more than 20,000 cubic yards of contaminated soil, placement of more than 150,000 cubic yards of import materials (backfill, bank fill, topsoil, sand cap, and rock armor), placement of 66,000 square feet of geosynthetic materials (reactive core mat and geosynthetic clay liner) and planting of more than 5 acres of native riverbank vegetation. MFA was responsible for overall conformance of the project to the approved design and implementing the construction quality assurance plan for soil removal and management, sediment capping progression, quantity tracking, upland and in-water unit of work approvals, on-call engineering services, and air quality monitoring.
