During the Joint Oregon and Washington Planning Conference on Thursday, October 27, the Planning Association of Washington and the Washington Chapter of the American Planning Association honored the Port of Skagit, the City of Sedro-Woolley, and Skagit County with their award for Comprehensive Planning in Small Communities.

This award recognizes the leadership and partnership of the City, County, and Port in preparing a Subarea Plan and Environmental Impact Statement for the Sedro-Woolley Innovation for Tomorrow (SWIFT) Center. The Subarea Plan encompasses the former Northern State Hospital, a 225-acre campus designed in the 1910s by the renowned Olmsted Brothers landscape architecture firm. The campus is included in the National Register of Historic Places, but has fallen into decline since the hospital closed in 1973.

The vision for the SWIFT Center is to create a campus that supports a mix of uses, including research and development, education, hospitality, high-tech manufacturing, and public open space. MFA is currently engaged in civil engineering and landscape design for the first phase of redevelopment.
